2024 on the whole has been a very positive year for Geek Quizzes. Attending events such as Comic-Con, hosting a quiz at a wedding, working with multiple businesses to deliver more speciality quizzes, getting my website up and running, and completing a Mastered course for creative businesses. Geek Quizzes is looking more like my vision for it every day. Of bringing like minded people together who share the same love of their fandoms to have fun and test their own knowledge.
Talking about bringing people together, I’m going to start with attending Unleashed Events Comic-Cons. The first Comic-Cons I attended as a business were in March at York and Sheffield. My anxiety was really bad for both of them, I felt overwhelmed, nervous, and several times I avoided speaking to people. However, by the end of the day I had made a few sales, got a few contacts, and really enjoyed myself. I then attended another Comic-Con in June at Leeds which was really successful. I even went up to the stage to ask people some of my questions. I learnt a lot from these events and plan to attend more in the future.
Also in March, I joined the creative workshop Mastered. This is a free bootcamp for creative businesses to help them with all aspects of their business. It included lessons on marketing, networking, sales, and branding. I met other businesses such as Positive Birth Leeds and Snuggle and Squish. This bootcamp gave me more confidence, skills, and I learnt a lot about business. The accountability sessions gave us space to reflect on how things were going and discuss ideas about things to try. I enjoyed my time with Mastered and would recommend it.
Throughout the year I’ve hosted my general knowledge quiz at the Two Pointers in Woodlesford, Leeds. This quiz has only gotten better as the year has progressed, with regulars coming back every week and an average attendance of about 20 people. It is also where I started hosting my speciality quizzes with themes such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Pokémon. This general knowledge quiz in Leeds I host every Wednesday. It includes a picture round, general knowledge questions, and a music round. It’s always a lot of fun in a great venue.
This was up until September when I hosted my first speciality quiz outside of the Two Pointers at the bar Leeds Postal Service. This was the themed quiz of Deadpool and X-Men. My anxiety for all the new venues this year was bad, with that first one being the worst, so much so that I was shaking throughout the event. However, the more I did and the more I pushed myself, it started to become easier.
I began working with Terminus Tap Room and Bottle Shop in Meanwood at which I hosted a Cornetto Trilogy quiz. This venue is great because it has its own beer from the Meanwood Brewery.
The Old King’s Arms in Horsforth was a The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit quiz. They serve food by Little Bao Boy which makes a nice change to the typical pub food. Crowd of Favours in Leeds I did a Marvel Quiz. The Canary in Leeds Dock booked a sold out Harry Potter Movies quiz. This bar is in a lovely area of Leeds by the canal, with great outdoor seating and lovely food. Archive in Kirkstall was one of my busiest with a Buffy the Vampire Slayer quiz. This is a large event space that often hosts big events such as weddings. Fearns in Leeds Dock where I hosted a Halloween quiz. Most of these venues became regular events for me where I would host a quiz once a month. This included themed quizzes such as Classic Horror Movies, Shrek, Game of Thrones, James Bond, Disney, and Christmas Films.
In October I hosted my first quiz at a wedding. The wedding was at Whitley Hall Hotel in Sheffield where I wrote a bespoke quiz for the wedding guests all about the married couple’s favourite things. The picture round was based on movies released in the years they were both born in. With questions and the music rounds based on things like their favourite books, bands, TV shows, and honeymoon destination.
A huge milestone for Geek Quizzes was launching my website. This allowed me to advertise all my upcoming events at all the venues I’m now working with. I now also sell my themed and speciality quizzes on the shop on my website.
Overall, a very positive year for Geek Quizzes and with plenty planned for 2025, next year will only get more exciting.
I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has attended one of my quizzes this year, hopefully see you at another quiz next year. Also a big thank you to all the venues I’ve worked with too, without which I wouldn’t have been able to host my quizzes.
